Special Needs Animals - Adopters Wanted!
DAISY is a sweet five-year-old calico kitty. She suffers from a neurological condition called hyperesthesia, which is a hypersensitivity of the nerves along her back that causes discomfort and emotional distress. Daisy has just started treatment for this condition, and she will probably need lifelong medication. She also requires a stable adult home with very little stress and lots of TLC. Daisy is loving and sweet, and she loves to cuddle. She is litter-box trained and doesn't need much space, just lots of kindness and affection.
BENNIE is a young adult cat who was found wandering a Texas neighborhood suffering from heat exhaustion and a severe infection in his eyes. Once he was returned to health, his rescuer discovered that Bennie is completely blind. He came to WARF after hurricane Dolly made it impossible for his foster home to keep him safe any longer. Although he gets around very well, uses the litter box, and will jump upon any available lap, Bennie requires an indoor home where he can be safe and happy. He is extremely people-oriented and likes to follow you around from room to room. Bennie must be introduced to other animals very slowly, as he still thinks he needs to defend himself from them, but he is full of love and would make a great pet for a family or single person.
BUBBA and NAVEL are two adult male cats who have tested positive for FIV, or feline immunodeficiency virus. This disease is not contagious to humans or other species of animals and can only be passed from cat to cat by a deep, penetrating bite wound. In many cases, cats can live out their normal lifespan without showing any signs or symptoms of disease. Both of these cats live in households with dogs and other cats, and they are very social and loving. With some love and care, they will make wonderful pets for many years to come.
MAESTRO is a German Shepherd mix who walked to Reno with his human companion from Northern Oregon. Upon arriving in Reno, his owner found that he could no longer care for the dog, and he was abandoned at Animal Control. At 12 years old, Maestro would certainly have been euthanized if a rescuer had not stepped forward. He is lively and friendly, gets along with other dogs and cats, and has a heart full of love to give! Maestro is currently in a foster home but would love to find his forever home for his remaining years. He is housetrained and well mannered, and he loves to go for walks and hikes.
DIAGO is an American Bulldog mix who was surrendered with his brother, Pedro. While Pedro has come out of his shell and is doing very well, Diago is not very happy at the shelter. He needs someone to work with him so that he can feel comfortable and secure. Diago is choosy about his canine playmates and would probably do best as a single dog or with a submissive female. He will give you a lifetime of gratitude and love in return for a chance at happiness.
JAKE is a sweet, friendly Viszla mix who was adopted and then returned to a Texas shelter after being hit by a car. After surviving emergency surgery, Jake is left with only partial movement in his hind legs and must use a specially made cart to go on walks and visits, which he thoroughly enjoys. Jake would be an excellent hospital therapy dog, as his joyous spirit and gentle temperament make him an instant favorite with everyone who meets him. He has already done some therapy visits to handicapped children but has no formal certification yet. He is currently in a foster home in Texas, but his foster mom will transport him to the right home. Jake gets along with other dogs and cats, and despite his disability he is playful and energetic. He would thrive in a home with lots of interaction and affection; he loves to visit and greets anyone he comes across with a kiss and a wag.
